“A suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden vest in a crowd of police recruits on Tuesday, killing at least 45 people, officials said, undercutting Iraqi security efforts as the nation struggles to show it can protect itself without foreign help,” the Associated Press now writes.

The number of people feared dead has been rising. Earlier, the AP said at least 40 had been killed. Reuters is putting the grim total at 42. The BBC says officials it has spoken to estimate at least 50 people have died.

And, the BBC adds: “The toll from Tuesday morning’s blast was the highest from a single attack since a Baghdad church siege in October which killed more than 50 people.” Copyright 2011 National Public Radio. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/.
