By Yolanda PerdomoAnother controversial conservative commentator won’t be speaking at DePaul University this fall.
The university is declining an appearance by Ben Shapiro because of security concerns. Protests have taken place on some college campuses where Shapiro has spoken.
In a statement, DePaul said “after observing events when Mr. Shapiro spoke elsewhere, it wasn’t in a position to provide security required to properly host at this time.”
Shapiro was invited by the The Young America’s Foundation. The group disagrees with the university’s decision, and is working to bring Shapiro back at a future date.
“It’s indicative of a pattern that we’re seeing on college campus’s across the country,” said Emily Jashinsky, a member of The Young America’s Foundation. “Which is that, we’re going to censor ideas that make our students uncomfortable and I think it’s really unfortunate because college campuses should be beacons of free exchange.”
In May, security was an issue when student protesters shut down an event featuring conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos. It kicked off a debate over free speech vs hate speech on DePaul’s campus.
