Divvy is adding 85 bike rental stations in Chicago, including another 23 in Evanston and Oak Park. When the program started in 2013, Chicago’s minority communities were mostly left out. That bothered Tiffany Childress Pierce, an avid cyclist from North Lawndale.

“We felt overlooked as west siders,” said Pierce. “We definitely questioned why there wasn’t the installation in North Lawndale and Little Village.”

The city said it listened to concerns. Sean Wiedel oversees Divvy for the city of Chicago.

“We’re adding about a dozen stations on the West Side and we’re adding about 20 stations on the Southwest Side,” said Wiedel

It will take about a month to get all 85 stations installed throughout the city and suburbs. With the new additions, the area will have more than 580 docking stations with close to 6000 bikes. Last year, the city installed 175 Divvy stations. Wiedel says a lack of funding was the reason why only 85 docks were set up for this year. The city wouldn’t say how many Divvy docks are projected for next year.
