It’s been nearly a year since Eight Forty-Eight began the Friday DJ Series and many of the DJs that come through the studio cited Hank Shocklee as one of their major influences.

Shocklee burst on the scene in the late ’80s as part of the production crew the Bomb Squad, he helped make hip-hop huge and influenced generations of musicians that followed as a founding member of Public Enemy. His sampling and sonic innovations broke new ground but they also brought up prickly legalities surrounding the use of song samples.

Schocklee continues to innovate—moving into movie scoring, multimedia production and more. Shocklee will spin live at the City of Chicago’s Electric Picnic Lunchbreak Music Series at Millennium Park over the weekend.
