Documentary explores sounds of jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi
Another trove of found footage is behind a new film featuring Vince Guaraldi. His name may ring a bell – and odds are you already know his music. Guaraldi is the man that gave Peanuts a soundtrack. But the jazz pianist had other pursuits as well.
More than 40 years ago, he set out to make a documentary with Ralph Gleason, the co-founder of Rolling Stone. Decades later, Gleason’s son Toby and award-winning filmmaker Andrew Thomas have brought their film back to life in The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi. The documentary makes its Chicago premiere at CIMMFest on Sunday, April 17.
WBEZ’s Richard Steele spoke to director Andrew Thomas, and the filmmaker started by talking about the discovery of the film footage.
