Chicago police are focusing on two police districts in an effort to bring down the crime numbers city-wide. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said that 25 percent of the murders in Chicago last year were committed in just two police districts, the 11th on the west side and the 7th in the Englewood neighborhood.

“We are going to relentlessly pursue reducing violence in these two districts for the people who live here because they’ve suffered too long,” McCarthy said.

The anti-crime initiative announced Monday isn’t brand new. Police have been focused on these areas for more than a year, starting a pilot program threatening gangs who use violence with massive attention from the police. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the violence in these areas is a priority for the whole city.

“Just because it happens in Englewood doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter. Just because happens in Garfield it doesn’t matter. It does matter and the city’s going to come to bear on it,” Emanuel said.

Emanuel said it only makes sense to focus policing based on the crime numbers.
