Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel has hired the son of a longtime Democratic official to be the city’s top lobbyist.

Matthew Hynes worked for the Emanuel campaign as a consultant, and will now direct the new mayor’s “Office of Legislative Counsel and Government Affairs.”

A lawyer for the past 14 years, Hynes is the brother of ex-Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes, and the son of Thomas Hynes, the former state Senate president and Cook County assessor. He’s worked with his dad in recent years in a law office that lobbies city and state officials. Their clients include DePaul University and CME group, the parent of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Matthew Hynes himself was registered with the city as a lobbyist as recently as last fall, though he’s not listed on the most recent registry.

Emanuel on Wednesday also announced other top staff members, including Teresa Mintle from the Chicago Transit Authority, as his chief of staff.
