Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is defending proposed fine increases for drivers who use fake, stolen or altered disability placards to park.

The proposed ordinance calls for violators to pay up to $1,000 per violation. Drivers who illegally display the placards could also have their cars impounded, which comes with a $2,000 fee.

Mayor Emanuel says the stiffer penalties are fair.

“The disability parking is for people with disability,” said the mayor. “Any abuse of that system undermines what is a legitimate benefit society gives to people with disability.”

Current fines for motorists start at $500 and a 30-day suspension of their driver’s license.

The proposal still needs approval from the city council.
