The BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana plans to expand its air monitoring system and will make daily emissions reports available to the public.

It’s part of an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency that BP must invest more than $400 million to install pollution controls and cut emissions.

Denny Larson is with the Global Community Monitor, an environmental group. He said the new system will use ultraviolet lights to monitor in real time.

“More than just small areas of the refinery are being monitored with real time equipment to ensure we have a better idea of what is actually crossing the fence line into the neighborhoods.”

The daily findings will also be available to the public on a BP website within 24 hours. And that can help the company reduce emissions quicker. The new system is expected to be operational in 2014.
