Listen in to this exhibit opening featuring the winners of the Emerging Architect Special Mention of the 2011 Mies van der Rohe Award competition. An initiative of the European Commission organized by the Fundación Mies van der Rohe, this biennial prize commends architectural excellence and draws attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new concepts and technologies, offering both individuals and public institutions an opportunity to reach a clearer understanding of the cultural role of architecture in the construction of our cities. Additionally, the prize sets out to support young professionals as they set off on their careers. In recognition of their conceptual, technical, and structured qualities, the jury selects two works: one that receives the prize and one that receives the Emerging Architect Special Mention. The jury also produces a set of shortlisted works to be included in the prize catalogue and exhibition.

In the 2011 edition, the jury made a selection of 45 shortlisted projects, and from among these, six were chosen as finalists for the prize. After visiting the finalists, the jury members met for the second time and decided the prize winner was the Neues Museum in Berlin by David Chipperfield Architects in collaboration with Julian Harrap. The Casa Collage in Girona, Spain by Ramon Bosch and Bet Capdeferro was selected for the Emerging Architect Special Mention.

Recorded Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago.
