“Brazil is one of the most dynamic and important poetry scenes in the world… if you want to see innovation in poetry, go to Brazil.” 

In 2007 Aufgabe Magazine translated 18 innovative Brazilian poets and brought their work to an American audience for the first time.  The response to the issue was so great that together with the Consulate General of Brazil, Northwestern University and the Chicago Poetry Project it was decided to bring four of these innovators to Chicago to read and present their work.   This event is sponsored by the Brazilian Consulate in Chicago and is taking place in conjunction with Aufgabe #6.  Curated by guest editor Ray Bianchi and with assistance from Mark Tardi.

Maria Esther Maciel is a poet and translator who teaches at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Her work has appeared around the world in over 20 languages.

Paulo Henriques Britto has recently published a book with BOA editions in the USA his translations of English and American poetry are considered the standard in Brazil.  He is a professor of English in Brazil.

Sergio Medeiros is a poet originally from Mato Grosso. His poetry is some of the most well read work in Brazil.  His work has appeared in many US and European magazines and his books have been translated into five languages.

Virna Teixiera is a neurologist and poet who works in Sao Paulo her works have been translated into at least three languages.
