A key backer of Chicago’s cell phone driving ban is surprised more violators haven’t been caught.

Police have written an average of about 25 tickets per day since the ordinance went into affect last July. Compare that to the more than 450 total traffic tickets written each day last year.

Alderman Ed Burke thought the total tickets would be higher.

“It could be, one that the cops don’t think it’s an important violation to write, or it could be that the drivers are hopefully complying with the law,” he mulls.

Burke says he’s seen a lot of drivers using hand-held cell phones. He hopes to extend the ban to include other distracting activities, including reading and drinking coffee while driving.
