It’s Thursday, and time for our Global Activism series. Each Thursday we hear about an individual who’s decided to work to make the world a better place.

Maurice Bonhomme and Jean Cayamitte have been best friends since they were kids. The two men grew up together in Petit Goave, Haiti. They both made their way to their United States and ended up working at the same place, New Trier High School. Their 50-year friendship has united them with a common goal: to give back to the country they left behind. So for nearly two decades the two New Trier security guards have been supporting the St. Joseph School in their hometown of Petit Goave.

Now fate has stepped in and a conversation in the hallways of New Trier has led to a partnership project between the two schools. The school Maurice’s father opened is now getting some help from the suburban highschool. Maurice says keeping the school open is a way to honor his father’s memory.
