In Naples, Italy, the mafia syndicate known as the Camorra controls neighborhoods, the garbage industry, even the local music scene. They fund musicians dubbed “neomelodics,” mostly male artists who sing in the local Neapolitan dialect. While they’re mega-stars at home, neomelodics are virtually unknown in the rest of Italy. A new documentary about the scene debuts today on the online broadcast channel VBS. Director Santiago Stelley introduces Jerome and Radio M host Tony Sarabia to some of the biggest names in neomelodic music.
