It’s important for college-age students to know who Harold Washington was, how he was treated by the local news media, how that coverage still influences the reporting of local politics today, and what the legacy of Washington’s mayoralty means to black politics now.

Wells-Barnett Professor Laura Washington; featuring Elizabeth Brackett (Chicago Tonight, WTTW-TV), Cheryl Corley (National Public Radio), Mike Flannery (WBBM-TV), John Kass (Chicago Tribune), Don Terry (Chicago Tribune), Andrew Patner (WFMT-FM) and Walter Jacobson (WBEZ-FM and former anchor, Fox News).

Organized by the Harold Washington Commemorative Year, an Illinois non-profit organization established to observe two important anniversaries: November 25, 2007 (the 20th anniversary of Harold’s sudden, untimely death) and April 12, 2008 (the 25th anniversary of his historic, tumultuous election as the first black mayor of Chicago); in collaboration with The DePaul Humanities Center.  Six months free public programming is being presented throughout the city to remember Harold and analyze his legacy.
