Heat takes toll on ComEd workers, too
The week's heat has been tough to endure for residents in places such as West Chicago, Lombard, Addison and Glen Ellyn, many of whom have gone most of the week without electricity.
Powerful thunderstorms on Sunday left them in the dark. But the heat’s been tough on those who’ve been scrambling to restore power to those residents, too. The crews are working despite the glaring sun and heat indices that topped 100 degrees some days.
“They have to wear certain gear to keep them safe,” said Arlana Johnson, ComEd spokesperson. “They are working 16-hour shifts, and 8 hours off for sleep. It is tough conditions.”
Johnson said 600 crews worked continuously to restore power to more than 300,000 homes this week.
