The National Weather Service is reported temperatures in the mid-90s Monday, but Chicago has only seen the beginning of this heat wave, which officials thought might bring record breaking weather. Temperatures may cool off briefly tomorrow, but things will heat back up after that. 

Dense fog blanketed much of the lakefront Tuesday morning.  The Chicago Parks District issued temporary swim bans for some beaches due to the fog. CBS 2 reported that the North Avenue and Oak Park Street beaches were closed for about an hour.

“For the week, the heat wave really kicks into gear,” said Richard Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “We’re forecasting highs to the lower and middle 90s on Wednesday, Thursday looks to be the hottest day of the week, with high temperatures and heat index values of 105 or maybe even a little higher. So maybe 105 to 110 heat index values.”

Spokesman Roderick Drew with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications says that says cooling centers are open, but not many people are using them. The city of Chicago is continuing to monitor weather conditions.

Health officials also are urging people to stay in air-conditioning, drink plenty of water and wear loose-fitting clothes.
