Hush Money Lawsuit Against Hastert Can Proceed
A victim known as James Doe said former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert agreed to pay $3.5 million if Doe kept quiet about sexual abuse committed during Hastert’s time as a high school wrestling coach.
Hastert stopped making payments in 2014, and Doe filed the lawsuit in April.
Hastert’s attorney wanted the court to dismiss the lawsuit saying it was filed after the statute of limitations for sexual abuse and that Doe violated the deal by talking to federal authorities.
But a Kendall County judge denied Hastert’s request Tuesday. Hastert has already paid the anonymous man about half of the hush money. Hastert is currently serving a 15 month prison sentence for violating banking laws related to the cover up.
