Starting July 17, anyone claiming unemployment benefits in Illinois will need to take an extra step: Registering with a state-run job-search service.

According to Jeff Mays, who runs the Illinois Department of Employment Security, this initiative takes inspiration from Wisconsin. After the state implemented similar measures, Mays says claimants ended up averaging fewer weeks collecting unemployment. With the new requirement, he hopes Illinois claimants will find jobs more quickly, and reduce the number of weeks they need benefits.
