Illinois’ largest government employee union wants to restart contract negotiations with Governor Bruce Rauner. A year ago - Rauner’s administration dropped out of negotiations with the union, called AFSCME. The governor’s office argues that the two sides are so far apart they’re at an impasse. In a new letter to the governor, AFSCME claimed to give some ground on a few sticking points in an effort to restart negotiations. Rauner’s office calls the letter “superficial.” If an impasse is officially declared in court, AFSCME would have to either accept Rauner’s offer or strike.
