A sham agency is trying to scam small businesses in Illinois by collecting bogus service fees.

The Secretary of State’s office says a firm calling itself Corporate Records Services is charging businesses $125 to fill out a fake form.

Beth Kaufman with the Secretary’s office says the scam documents are identical to official forms that business owners are required to fill out.

“The only thing that businesses have to do is file their annual report, and that’s a report they file once a year on the anniversary that their business began. That’s all that they’re required to do by law,” Kaufman said.

Kaufman says so far no one has fallen victim to the scam, but the state is investigating.

She says if businesses receive questionable documents, they should contact the Secretary of State’s office.
