Both Illinois’ U.S. Senators voted Tuesday for a measure that would pressure President Bush into giving a timetable to withdraw troops from Iraq.

But the Senate rejected that amendment, and instead endorsed a statement that asks the president for regular updates on the war.

Senator Dick Durbin says the country needs a change in course from what he termed a ""failed policy.""

""Our critics say we want to cut and run,"" Durbin says. ""No. We want to stop the loss of life by Americans in Iraq. We want to make sure the Iraqis know that it’s their responsibility for their future.""

Durbin says lawmakers owe the military and the American people a plan for bringing stability to Iraq, and bringing U.S. troops home.

Senate Republican Majority Leader Bill Frist accused the Democrats of supporting an exit strategy, instead of a ""successful strategy.""
