The Illinois Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments today over Illinois’ Parental Notification of Abortion Act.

The law says doctors must notify a guardian if a minor is seeking an abortion. It was passed in 1995, but the Act hasn’t been enforced because of an ongoing legal battle.

Lorie Chaiten with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois said the law is discriminatory and harmful to young women.

“The majority of young women do in fact involve a parent in their abortion decision. But for those who don’t, it is often for very good reason. And it is also often because they very seriously fear for their safety,” she said.

But Peter Breen of the conservative Thomas More Society said it’s important for parents to know.

“This is a perfectly reasonable, non-controversial proposition for most Illinoisans. And there’s certainly nothing in the Illinois Constitution that prevents parents from being told prior to their children being taken for medical procedures,” he said.

It could still be awhile before the Supreme Court issues its ruling.
