The Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake is getting more protection now from the Endangered Species Act. The snake is also known as the ‘swamp rattler.’ It was once abundant throughout the entire Great Lakes Region but now faces extinction. Its new designation as a federally threatened species carries fines poaching fines up to $25-thousand dollars. Several swamp rattlers are on display at the Lincoln Park Zoo. 6 were born there over the summer.
