The Republican candidate for Illinois treasurer is renewing questions about loans made by the bank owned by her opponent’s family.

It came out during the primary that Broadway Bank in Chicago loaned money to a man with alleged mob ties.

Alexi Giannoulias is the Democratic candidate for treasurer.

He’s vice president and senior loan officer at Broadway Bank, which is owned by his family.

Today, his challenger, Christine Radogno, a Republican state senator, called those loans “questionable.”

“When you’re asking for the public trust, you better have a pretty darn good record of making good judgment, good decisions, based on good judgment,” Radogno says. “And I don’t see that as being there.”

Giannoulias replied: “She’s having trouble raising money, she’s trying to get her name out there, taking shots, I’m going to keep this a positive campaign.”

Giannoulias says the bank did nothing wrong. He says it has thousands of customers, and like any bank, there are a handful with legal problems unrelated to the bank.

Their comments followed their first debate in the treasurer’s race.
