In the Know: Chicago's Spy in the Sky

Previous Next

Do the new “automated speed enforcement” laws just raise city revenue, or benefit citizens in other ways? Do Chicagoans feel safer with cameras on our street corners or is the government spending too much time and money looking over our city of big shoulders?

Listen in to a discussion about Chicago under surveillance, as we talk about what these cameras mean to the city, our safety, and look at larger implications of privacy and just what constitutes public space.

Panelists include the director for CeaseFire Illinois, Tio Hardiman, 39th Ward Chicago Alderman Margaret Laurino, and Rajiv Shah, assistant professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago, whose research seeks to understand the relationship between the design of information technologies and society. The discussion is moderated by journalist Laura Washington.

Recorded Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the Chicago History Museum.
