“Election officials in Northwest Indiana say turnout is light so far for primary elections.

Because Lake County, Indiana is so heavily Democratic, Tuesday’s primaries are tantamount to a general election.

No Republican has won a county-wide race in Lake County in more than half a century.

The winner of today’s primary for Lake County sheriff is expected to easily win November’s general election.

That race has become particularly heated in the last few weeks.

There are also several races for state senator and state representative that are worth watching.

For instance, three Hispanic women are trying to win the Democratic nomination for the state representative seat now held by John Aguilera, who did not seek re-election.

Aguilera is Indiana’s only Hispanic lawmaker. His district is heavily Hispanic.
