From the White Sox twitter feed today:

There was speculation in our editorial meeting (okay, I started it) about whether or not our new mayor would be like the old - choosing allegiance to one baseball team. Rahm Emanuel is a Cubs fan who spent last Friday soaking up the cold sun at Wrigley Field. Would he show up today at U.S. Cellular Field to cheer on the Sox? He did you one better Cubs fans: He hung out in the Sox clubhouse.

Now to be fair, Mayor Daley could be seen wearing Cubs gear and attending rallies for Cubbie pride when big games were on deck. But Daley was rarely seen at Wrigley (neither was his dad) and held a snobbish attitude towards ivy and pinstripe blue.

So the question today: Is Chicago ready for a mayor who likes both teams? Is that something Chicago can handle? If you listen to sports radio, you would know that it is unacceptable for Chicago baseball fans to like both teams. It’s almost a one-way ticket to poser-ville. It’s one of those strange “I’m more Chicago than you” mentalities that long-time residents of the city hold close to their hearts.

So maybe the change at City Council isn’t about corruption and transparency, but more about changing attitudes and culture…about Chicago baseball. Could we be okay with a mayor who didn’t hate the other baseball team?
