It’s already the third Friday of June and that means another installment of New Sounds with Chicago Reader music writer Peter Margasak. This month, Peter has music from Romania, Austin, Texas, and Brazil. Also, a conversation with singer Ersi Arvizu. She was once a lead singer with the 1970’s East L.A. band El Chicano but before that she and her two sisters had their own girl group called The Sisters. The trio scored a minor hit with their take on “Gee Baby Gee.”

Arvizu quit the record business after her split with El Chicano. But, Arvizu was coaxed back into the fold by Ry Cooder. The artist sought her out for his 2005 album Chavez Ravine. Ersi reluctanly agreed to take part in the project and since then she and Cooder have become friends. Arvizu’s recent first ever solo release, Friend  for Life, is dedicated to that bond. Arvizu talks with Tony about her new album, boxing and her stint with El Chicano.
