James Murphy almost wrote for Seinfeld

This week Sound Opinions welcomes James Murphy, the charasmatic front man of LCD Soundsystem. The self-effacing producer/bandleader spoke with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot at length about his long-running music career. One of the most interesting stories of his life before LCD involved his chance at becoming a writer for Seinfeld.

Murphy explains in the video below that while in college a friend introduced him to a producer looking for a New York City-based writer to join the Seinfeld staff. The staff was worried about maintaining its “New York feeling.” Murphy says he gave her some of his writing, but never followed up on her repeated requests for a spec script. All along he thought they wanted him to write for The Gary Shandling Show and it was only recently that he realized his mistake.

Though Murphy has been haunted by dreams about the life he could have had, he says he’s glad he didn’t have that level of success at that point in his life. He thinks he’s a better person for going through some failures in his twenties. Check it out for yourself here:
