Illinois’ two U.S. senators see the growing Occupy Wall Street movement in very different ways. Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk criticized the Occupy Wall Street movement, including the Chicago branch.

He said it seems like a political and pharmacological event.

“It feels like undisciplined, unfocused, unintellectual anger,” Kirk told reporters at an unrelated news conference Monday.

He added that their demands would make for terrible public policy.

“I think if the Congress actually followed their direction, we would have a deep depression and millions of American would be out of work,” he said.

Meantime, Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin called the movement a work in progress.

“At the basis of this is a complaint that American working families are falling behind no matter how hard they work. I think they’re right,” Durbin said Monday.

He also said he can identify with protestor outrage at bank bailouts, but that he won’t be supporting the movement until he sees their specific proposals.

Occupy Chicago protestors say they’ve been rallying downtown for more than three weeks.
