Kishi Bashi performs “Manchester” from 151a (Joyful Noise)

Today K Ishibashi wowed the staff of Chicago Public Media. As the violinist looped and tweaked his own riffs and voice on Afternoon Shift, a crowd formed outside the studio windows. Based on the immediate reaction, I think his musical project, Kishi Bashi, might have legs.

Ishibashi has performed with the likes of Regina Spektor and Sondre Lerche, but it was Of Montreal ringleader Kevin Barnes who gave him the necessary push to record his debut album 151a. As he told Steve Edwards today, earlier in his career he’d been embarrassed of the violin.

Kishi Bashi performs Wednesday night with Of Montreal at the Metro in Chicago. 151a, is out April 10th on Joyful Noise Records.
