Latinos in Chicago have announced a campaign to increase their numbers at the polls in next month’s municipal elections.

An effort last summer boosted the city’s registered Latino voters to about 200,000. But another 100,000 eligible Latinos still have not registered, so the Chicago-based U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute has enlisted youth volunteers and interns for a new campaign.

Lisa a Rodr guez, a freshman at Harold Washington College, says, “We go door to door. We’re going to start going to libraries. We’re going to high schools right now. And just out in the streets.”

The crew is also approaching immigrants on their way out of naturalization ceremonies.

The deadline to register for February’s municipal election is January 30.
