Lhasa de Sela began singing in public when she was 13 years old; Billie Holiday tunes and traditional Mexican numbers at a San Francisco cafe.

The Mexican-American eventually gained a worldwide following with her hauntingly beautiful voice, poetic lyrics and a musical style that ranged from sparse folk to ranchera, gypsy jazz and klezmer.

She died on New Years Day and this week Radio M pays homage.

Also the featured album: a dose of latin funk from the San Francisco band La Clave. The band released it’s only album in 1973.

And a musical happy birthday to the King and Bowie.
