By Greta JohnsonA relative of a man who was shot over the weekend by an off-duty cop says the officer never identified himself as police.
According to a police statement, an off-duty officer encountered an aggressive male on the 2600 block of North Monitor on the city’s northwest side. Police say the officer identified himself and was patting the resident down when one of his family members came up and hit the officer with a bat several times. That’s when the officer says he fired twice, hitting the man with the bat.
But Veronica, a family member who doesn’t want her last name used, says the officer never identified himself before drawing a gun on her 17 year old grandson. She says her son, the boy’s father, was killed by Chicago Police almost 12 years ago. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
