Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel this morning will share his 2017 budget proposal with the city’s aldermen. 

The mayor estimates a much lower deficit than years past. His finance team is calculating a shortfall of around $137 million dollars — the mayor’s first budget hole was nearly five times that. Aldermen and taxpayers will likely be listening to see how the mayor proposes to fill that gap.

There also is a lot of interest in the Public Safety portion of the budget. To help curb the surge of gun violence the mayor has said he’d add 970 more positions to the police department but hasn’t yet detailed how he’ll pay for them.
