Wal-Mart’s plan to open 10 or 20 new stores in Chicago has Mayor Richard Daley taking notice.

Daley says people are leaving the city to shop at Wal-Marts in the suburbs and he doesn’t get why unions and aldermen are opposed to having stores in the city.

“I’m not taking sides in regards to all these stores,” he says, “But like anything else, I’d like to build stores in Englewood. I’d like to build stores on the South Side and the West Side. If the suburban area can have them, why can’t the city have them?”

Daley says he won’t take sides of a proposed ordinance that would make big box retail outlets pay at least $10 per hour and provide benefits.

A spokesperson for Wal-Mart says if the ordinance passes City Hall, it quote, “puts the brakes” on plans to build stores in the city.
