The candidates for Chicago mayor are debating the value of a Chicago Public Schools education. The issue of the day for mayoral candidates Tuesday quickly became whether they would send their kids to Chicago Public Schools.

Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel called a news conference to talk about how he’d improve the city’s public schools. But he was asked repeatedly by reporters where he plans to send his three young children to school when they move back to Chicago.

“I’m not saying what I’m going to do, but it’s a decision I’m going to make with my wife and my family and that’s how I’ll make that decision and I think the people of Chicago will appreciate that,” Emanuel said.

Soon after, several of Emanuel’s opponents pounced. Former Chicago Public Schools’ chief Gery Chico praised his own public school education in the city. So did Chicago City Clerk Miguel Del Valle.

One thing none of the candidates mentioned is outgoing Mayor Richard Daley’s decision to send his kids to Catholic school.
