Illinois mayors continue to protest a plan that would delay payments to municipalities from the state.

Governor Pat Quinn wants to withhold millions of dollars in monthly payments to municipalities if lawmakers don’t approve his borrowing plan to pay off billions in overdue bills.

But Democratic and Republican mayors around the state want to block that plan saying a payment delay would impact already squeezed local services like police and fire. Bob Abboud is President of Barrington Hills.

“We either have to dip into reserves, which affects the asset performance of our reserves. Or in some cases we have to go out and borrow this money. So we’re now paying interest on this money, real interest,” he said.

Abboud says it’ll still cost his village even if those funds are paid late.

Suburban mayors say they’ve been meeting with lawmakers in Springfield with mixed support.

A statement from Governor Quinn’s office says “our hands are tied.” It says the governor wants to pay back all the state’s bills including those to local governments, but it says the state’s out of resources and time.
