Indiana, a state traditionally painted red, is showing a slight lead for McCain with 20% of the votes in. Republican Mitch Daniels is also being called as the winner of governor’s race. Chicago Public Radio reporter Eilee Heikenen-Weiss is currently at a polling site in Precinct 325 in Gary, IN. She and fellow reporter Mike Puente went out to see if there was any validity to rumors that certain groups, partisan or otherwise, were interfering with voters getting into the polls before closing time. Indiana polls close at 6 p.m., but there was some confusion as to whether or not you have to be in the shoot by that time, in line, or merely on site at the polling location. Heikenen-Weiss reports that election judges at Precinct 325 only today learned that voters must be counted whether or not they are in the shoots or online. She spoke with a Republican pollwatcher who did not experience any problems at their precinct, but did find issues at other locations. Meanwhile in Highland, IN, Mike Puente found that voters were being served as late as 6:30 p.m. Update: Nate Silver from Fivethirtyeight.com notes that Obama is outperforming Kerry.

Obama is substantially outperforming Kerry — which is what he needs to do to win the state, of course, but the differences are pretty substantial. Update 2: Despite these early results, exit polls in Indiana are favorable for Obama according to MSNBC. The Democratic candidate received 55% of the votes cast by women, and was tied with McCain among men.
