Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy used his time at a police budget hearing Wednesday to push for a new state gun law.

In explaining Chicago’s high murder rate compared to other large U.S. cities McCarthy said there are a lot more guns here. He says for every gun seized by police in New York, Chicago police seize nine guns.

“The number one source of those firearms is not Mississippi, it’s not Indiana, it’s not Wisconsin,” said McCarthy. “It’s Cook County.”

McCarthy says in Illinois there’s no requirement for gun owners to report guns that are lost or stolen and that makes it easier for straw purchasers to put guns into the hands of criminals.

McCarthy says the state needs a law that would require gun owners to report lost or stolen or transferred weapons.
