It’s been about a decade since Chicago began demolishing public housing high rise buildings at Cabrini-Green on the city’s Near North Side. Today officials gathered to dedicate the first housing to be built on the footprint of one of those former high rises.

The new housing, called Parkside of Old Town, is a mixed-income community. While other mixed-income developments have been built near Cabrini land, this is the first housing on the site of where one of the high rises once loomed.

Mixed-income is a centerpiece of the Chicago Housing Authority’s billion-dollar Plan for Transformation. The mix is typically a third public housing, a third affordable and a third market rate. Miles Warren grew up in Cabrini. He says it was a neighborhood where people looked out for each other.

WARREN: I just hope and pray that that same type of community comes here today at Parkside with the community that’s going to be here.

Warren himself bought a unit at Parkside, where condos are selling for 300,000 and up. Townhomes start at half a million dollars.

Activists say they are pleased that the units are now open. But they do worry that this new tony neighborhood will have different rules for CHA families and the upper-income families.
