On today’s show Steve Edwards talks with a scientist from the Chicago Botanic Gardens who’s found that the seasons are changing earlier in Chicago than ever before. Changing seasons works as a metaphor for all the segments on the show: the turn Chicago’s music scene took in the ’80s, the change a neighborhood will face with an archetectural icon being demolished and the season of parenthood not lining up with finding true love.

Listen to the first hour of the show

’80s Music Scene in Chicago:  Chicago has been home to innovation in music for as long as anyone can recall.  In the 1980s, two forms of music were birthed in the Windy City: “house” and “industrial.”  We speak with one of the key figures in the ’80s industrial dance music scene, Chris Connelly (RevCo, Ministry, Pigface).

Lee Bey on Architecture:  The bell is tolling for Shepherd’s Temple.  After multiple attempts to save the historic former synagogue, the West Side icon may only have a few days left before the wrecking ball arrives.  What will it mean for the Douglas Park neighborhood, and for similar structures across the city?

Listen to the second hour of the show

Climate Change/Zone Change:  No matter what you think about climate change and who’s doing the changing…flowers and plants are blooming earlier than ever here in Northern Illinois.  What impact will it have to our native plants?

Friends With Kids:  If you’re in your mid/late 30’s, want children, and haven’t yet found true love, can you have a kid or two with your best friend and keep looking for the fireworks elsewhere?  That’s the premise of the upcoming film Friends With Kids, starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Ed Burns, John Hamm, etc. We’ll talk with writer/actor/director Jennifer Westfeldt about her latest project.

Breaking news: We moved our interview with Jennifer Westfeldt to later in the week in order to cover the developments on moving the G-8 from Chicago to Camp David.
