The blues world lost a legend on Monday. David “Honeyboy” Edwards died in his home in Chicago. Edwards, known for his emotional singing and eccentric timing, was 96.

Chicagowill play host to the 35th Annual NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series. The series’ opening ceremony kicked off Monday evening at Navy Pier. The series was last hosted in Chicago in 1983, and has teams from all over the U.S. and Canada participating.

The head of the Chicago Police Department, Superintendent Gary McCarthy called the system “broken” last night at a public hearing. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel got several earfuls from residents during a public meeting on the city’s budget. The tightly controlled event Monday night unraveled a bit when Emanuel was confronted by a laid-off city employee.

The Indiana State Board of Education approved allowing private firms to take over five failing schools; four in Indianapolis and one in Gary.  The board’s move came as a result of recommendations set forth by the state’s schools Superintendent Tony Bennett. Bennett said the schools have been failing for years, and something needed to be done.

How do you say the word “boast” in Arabic? Many  students at Lindblom Math and Science Academy could tell you. Only a handful of public high schools in Chicago teach Arabic, and Lindblom has the largest program. Now, this school on Chicago’s South Side wants to create an Arabic language and culture center – for the school district and the community. As the principal at Lindblom says:  It’s all Arabic, all the time.

Cubbies won yesterday and will have the Giants again Tuesday night. The White Sox, also winners Monday, have the Twins tonight.
