Motorola Solutions Inc. is creating 400 new jobs but they won’t be at the company’s headquarters in northwest suburban Schaumburg. Motorola Solutions CEO Greg Brown says the company’s headquarters is staying put in Schaumburg. But the new jobs will be in downtown Chicago.

“We’re still headquartered there,” Brown said. “We’ll keep our headquarters there. It’s not one versus the other, but this is an attractive area to grow.”

Brown announced Tuesday that the company, which makes bar code readers and police scanners, is expanding its work force and he said the downtown office is appealing, if for nothing more than its location.

“The more centrally-located you are with a skilled workforce around you that allows for low cost transfer of people and mobility is clearly conducive to investment and local jobs,” he said.

Motorola recently split into two companies: Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility. Mobility recently announced it’s keeping its corporate headquarters in north suburban Libertyville.

Brown said the City of Chicago did not offer any special tax credits to put offices downtown.
