The new Cook County Board, sworn in Monday, is promising to be more civil than its predecessor.

So far, they’re all getting along. But the county board hasn’t always been the friendliest of places. It has a history of spawning some epic political rivalries. There was Board President Todd Stroger and Tony Peraica, Mike Quigley and Todd Stroger and Todd Stroger on just about every commissioner in the room.

“Talking about the world and all that crap,” Stroger once said. “What do you know about the world?”

It’s worth noting none of those commissioners are still on the county board. Instead, when the new class was sworn in Monday, there was one main theme: civility.

Several commissioners and new Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle all asked for a more reserved board. Commissioners even seemed willing to work with new Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle on her latest proposal: cutting 21 percent from elected leaders’ budgets.
