The new Chicago agency tasked with investigating police shootings held a job fair Thursday at Malcolm X College.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is scheduled to replace the Independent Police Review Authority next fall. Before then, they have to hire almost 100 investigators.

Chief Administrator Sharon Fairley said that’s more than double the number of investigators currently reviewing police shootings and misconduct for the Independent Police Review Authority.

“We’re operating on a skeleton crew right now, and we’re just trying to do the best we can to keep the cases flowing, so the transition can go as smoothly as possible,” Fairley said.

IPRA was scrapped as part of an effort to increase police accountability.

Fairley says the new agency will be more robust, with tougher requirements for its investigators.
