City and community leaders say the new Kennedy-King College should spark investment for the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

The school celebrated the opening of its new campus yesterday.

Chicago Public Radio’s Natalie Moore reports.

The red-brick campus anchors the corner of 63rd and Halsted.

It replaces a once-crumbling strip mall. The urban campus has open space and green pathways.

City Colleges Chancellor Wayne Watson says the new Kennedy-King is for students— and residents.

WATSON: This will not only be a catalyst in the community but would also set up a very synchronic relationship relationship with the community where it’s going to feed off of each other.

Officials say Kennedy-King is the centerpiece of redevelopment for the economically struggling Englewood. In addition to new programs, the college will have a restaurant, bakery and a childcare facility.

There is no word on what will happen to the old building at 69th and Wentworth.

Registration has begun for the fall semester, which will begin at the new campus in August.
