Gregg Araki is considered one of the darlings of the early ’90s New Queer Cinema movement. Films like The Living End and The Doom Generation were sexually explicit and decidedly confrontational –a filmed version of the popular political slogan  “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.”

In recent years Araki’s filmmaking has moved in more somber directions. But he’s back with a film both darkly apocalyptic and hilariously angst ridden. Kaboom is its name and Eight Forty-Eight’s regular film critic Hank Sartin stopped by to share his thoughts. Sartin’s a senior editor at Time Out Chicago.

Everything Is Going Fine opens in Chicago Friday at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

The Chicago opening of Kaboom is Friday at the Music Box Theatre.
