The Chicago Board of Education has approved new rules for sex education.

Middle and high school students also will learn about condoms and other contraceptives. All schools will also be expected to teach that abstinence is the most effective form of birth control.

The new approach replaces guidelines that allowed individual schools and teachers more flexibility.

Students who helped draft the new policy say teens need to learn about contraceptives to stay safe.

Opponents worry abstinence will get shortchanged during classroom discussions.
